From The Program Chair
Fellow Spinners,
Like many of you, fall is one of the busiest times of the year for me; as I find myself doing more shows, I also find that I really look forward to seeing all of you each month. After many, many yards of towels and shawls, having time to spin and gab is wonderful.
As fall comes to an end and we head into Christmas shopping and all the other holiday rituals, I know that the Retreat at Shakertown is one of the things I look forward to the most.
This year at Shakertown we are trying to keep things a little less chaotic, we will have only the Crone Crowning and Dinner on Friday. The business meeting, gift exchange and raffle will be held on Saturday. Carol has offered to bring her white board and put up a schedule for us. The Weaver’s Heirloom Towel exchange has been moved to the January meeting. Hopefully everyone will have a fun and relaxing weekend this year.
Please make note that the reservation form for Shakertown is in this newsletter, the deadline for reservations to be sent to Maureen by Nov 15.
We have almost all the surveys in by now and will try and give the results at the November and December meetings. They will also be published in the January newsletter.
Please get your survey in by October 31st if you want it counted. Email me if you want another copy.
A big thank you needs to go out to the spinners who demonstrated at Bernheim Forest for the Colorfest. These 12-14 people made it possible to have 2 meetings at Bernheim in 2008, this is about a $600 value to our club. If you couldn’t come this year, try to help out next year. Each year it seems like the same people are there helping.
Also, thanks to Debbie Longwith for keeping track of any votes we take at meetings.
Our annual Market Day will be November 10th at Frankfort. This is a great way to buy from our members.

Rent-A-Loom
Don’t forget, the club owns a lovely little 4 harness floor loom that rents out for only $25 a month, with a $100 deposit. If you’ve been wanting to try weaving and have hesitated at the high initial capital outlay, try it first to see if you like it! The library also has the books to get you started, and there are several qualified teachers in the club as well. Contact Nancy Reid to reserve the loom.
News from the Library
Greetings all from your friendly librarian......we have so many wonderful books just waiting to be read and enjoyed so please email me at friendshipspinners.com or tktapestry@msn.com to bring a book for you!!! I will have the entire library at the Shakertown retreat for all to enjoy. Thank You,

Shakertown!
If you have not been in Friendship Spinners very long and have not been to Shakertown it is truly a treat. This is our largest meeting of the year and is a great way to get to know other members. This year it will be on Dec.7 and 8. Everyone tries to stay on Friday night, and a few diehards end up staying Saturday night. Come and stay as long as you want, even if it’s just Saturday afternoon.
We have two buildings reserved with rooms and a building reserved to spin in on Friday night and Saturday.
Friday night we will have our annual Crone Crowning and the Parade of Crones. This is our way of honoring our members who have freely given of themselves and their knowledge to newer spinners, knitters and weavers.
Reservations for dinner and breakfast will have to be made by individuals this year, as Shakertown has changed the way they take our reservations. An 800 number is included with the reservation form included in this newsletter. This may actually end up working better for those of us who would rather eat earlier than the 7:30 PM time.

State Fair Report: Big Scandal!
The KY State Fair has come and gone. Friendship Spinners annually sponsors 5 classes, which means that we pay the winners’ premiums; a Spin-Off one year subscription for 1st place; and cash totaling $15 per class for prizes for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th places. This year, not a single member of Friendship Spinners won any of those prizes! Come on, people, let’s keep it in the family!
The classes are: Handspun Yarn for Novice Spinners, Handspun Designer Yarn with Swatch, 100% Wool Plied Handspun Yarn, Wool Blend Handspun Yarn; and Handspun, Handwoven Article.
To enter the State Fair, you must get a book, which has descriptions of all classes and prizes. You can get one for free by calling 502-367-5000, or by going to the web site, WWW.KYSTATEFAIR.ORG. Look under the textiles division; entry blanks are included. The entry fee is very reasonable, and it’s fun to get into a little friendly competition with your peers. There are lots of other textile classes, too. Let’s be a bigger presence in 2008, especially in the Handspun, Handwoven category.

From the Archivist
I interviewed Geri Street as a member of the original spinning group that became what we know now as Friendship Spinners. Here is a synopsis of her response.
Marilyn Fischer invited a group of spinners and weavers to meet at her farm in Simpsonville, KY around 1985. The group had 8-10 members who continued to meet at Marilyn’s for some time, gathering to spin, have a potluck lunch, and relaxing together pretty much as we do today. Eventually someone came up with the name of Friendship Spinners for the group. A few years later, a newsletter was started.
Many of the members raised their own rabbits, sheep and an occasional alpaca and the main source of fleece for the spinners was from other members. They washed and carded it by hand. One of the ladies would bring her angora rabbit to the meeting and spin off the rabbit.
The group has changed. It’s grown in leaps and bounds and Geri likes that. Today, fewer members have their own animals. Most spinners buy prepared roving because it’s easier.
Geri’s idea of the ideal group would be to be “just a group to get together to spin. It’s very relaxing.” She’d like a few less workshops, with an occasional one thrown in, using well-known instructors coming to share their expertise.
Thanks, Geri for sharing with us.
